Review: Cathedral: The Story of Its Construction

Cathedral: The Story of Its Construction Cathedral: The Story of Its Construction by David Macaulay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

15 March, 2010

Another impulse check-out. Those New shelves are located right by the desk, you understand. We flipped through it during reading time, not to read the text, but just to gawk at Macaulay's amazing pictures. I'll go back later and reread the text, too.

Review: Quietly Hostile

Quietly Hostile Quietly Hostile by Samantha Irby
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Basically I had to let Irby jump the queue because, of the ludicrously high number of books I have borrowed from my three libraries, this one has the most people waiting for it.

Irby's writing is both funny and moving. It's also comforting, because she has seen plenty of literal, as well as metaphorical, shit. Irby is candid and unfiltered on topics which would mortify me to acknowledge to just myself. Her advice is brilliantly useful: she knows how to get through an array of bathroom conundrums that Martha Stewart would never address. Irby is up there with Jenny Lawson and Allie Brosh for people who can make me laugh despite dire circumstances.

Review: The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf

The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf by Mark Teague
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Teague's oil paintings please me as does his inclusion of the ubiquitous chair. I don't especially doubt are for the gender roles here, nor the food shaming and I have serious questions about a plot point. (view spoiler)

Regardless, it's a new twist on a familiar story, otjas humor, and Teague gets a lot of mileage out of unconventional pig behavior. AND there is a valid, non-food or -building code based solution tok the pig vs. wolf conundrum, for which I am grateful. The cat and duck walk-ons are good too.

Review: Time for Bed, Miyuki

Time for Bed, Miyuki Time for Bed, Miyuki by Roxane Marie Galliez
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Before Miyuki's grandfather can put her to bed there are a number of chores that must be done. There is an element of fantasy to the routine of chores and getting ready for bed that intrigues and charms. The mood is completely different, but it reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are.
The art is exquisite: beautifully patterned and shaped while also calming and serene through clever use of white space.
So lovely. I'm going to need to see all the Miyuki books now. Also, someone needs to make a Miyuki nursery using fabrics based on the patterns and incorporating some of the art into the aesthetic.

Review: Head On

Head On Head On by John Scalzi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

09 June 2018

Clever and entertaining. It's an interesting world Scalzi has created, and this is a fun direction to take. And given how much I like the running gag about threeps being destroyed, Hilketa is a perfect sport for the world. And even more threeps being destroyed! Sweet.
